Gyeongju

Gyeongju — A Thousand-Year-Old City, Korea's Open-Air Museum

Gyeongju is a different kind of destination. The whole city is layered with a thousand years of the Silla dynasty's history. Royal tombs swell like grass mounds throughout the streets, 7th-century temples and an observatory stand preserved, and alleys mix cafés with hanok houses. Foreign travelers often understand it best when you call it "Korea's Kyoto."

What it is

A small city on Korea's eastern side in North Gyeongsang Province. It was the millennium-long capital of Silla (BC 57 – AD 935). Giant royal tombs, temples (Bulguksa, Seokguram), an astronomical observatory (Cheomseongdae), and Anapji (a pond garden) are scattered through and around the city, with many sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

🏯 In the city (bike / walk)

• Daereungwon & Cheonmachong — 23 royal tombs rising like grass hills. Cheonmachong's interior is open.
• Cheomseongdae — the oldest astronomical observatory in East Asia, 7th century. Famous after dark.
• Anapji (Donggung & Wolji) — the Silla royal palace's pond garden. The night view is the real specialty. The hour or two after sunset is the moment.
• Hwangnidan-gil — a hanok-alley café street. The walk to do in town.
• Gyeongju National Museum — Silla relics, free. The rainy-day answer.

🏔 Outskirts (taxi / bus)

• Bulguksa Temple — UNESCO. The peak of Korean temple architecture. 20 min by car.
• Seokguram Grotto — on the mountain above Bulguksa. A stone Buddha. Sunrise spot. 30 min by car.
• Yangdong Village — a Joseon-era yangban village, UNESCO. 30 min by car.

Getting there

• KTX: Seoul or Cheongnyangni Station → Singyeongju Station in about 2 hours. Easiest.
• Singyeongju Station → downtown: city bus or taxi (about 6 km to the center).
• Express bus: Seoul → Gyeongju about 4 hours.

In the city — a bike is the answer

The main downtown sights cluster within a 2–3 km radius, so a bicycle is the most efficient option.

• Bike rentals are common downtown and near Hwangnidan-gil entrance; about 10,000 won/day.
• Flat terrain, fine for beginners.
• One bike loop: Daereungwon → Cheomseongdae → Anapji → Hwangnidan-gil = about 3 hours.

For the outskirts (Bulguksa, Seokguram), bike is out — use taxi or city bus.

Suggested itineraries

• 1 night, 2 days — Day 1: city bike tour + Anapji at night / Day 2: Bulguksa, Seokguram + Hwangnidan-gil lunch
• 2 nights, 3 days — the above + Yangdong Village or Bomun Tourist Complex
• A day trip works, but missing Anapji at night is the biggest regret. 1 night strongly recommended.

Food

• Hwangnam-ppang — Gyeongju's signature pastry, a small bun filled with sweet red bean. Hwangnam-ppang, chal-bori-ppang, and Gyeongju-ppang all imitate it; the original is at the Hwangnidan-gil flagship.
• Ssambap — Gyeongju's leaf-wrap set meal.
• Gukbap (rice soup) — old shops around Hwangnam-dong.
• Cafés — Hwangnidan-gil is packed with hanok cafés, a hot zone in Korea's café trend.

Season by season

• 🌸 Spring (April) — cherry-blossom season. Bomun Tourist Complex and around Daereungwon are spectacular. The recommended season for foreign visitors.
• ☀️ Summer — midday is hot; bike mornings or evenings. Anapji night view at its summery best.
• 🍁 Autumn (October) — Bulguksa foliage + quieter crowds. The second-best season.
• ❄️ Winter — quiet and calm. Anapji is cold, though.

Honest tips

• For Anapji at night, the sweet spot is about an hour after sunset. If the queue is too long, wait it out.
• Pair Bulguksa and Seokguram on the same day — taxis and buses route them efficiently. Seokguram sits on a mountain — leave extra time.
• Hwangnam-ppang vs chal-bori-ppang vs Gyeongju-ppang — they're similar, but the original brand has one flagship. For gifts, buy there.
• Helmets aren't really worn for bikes — still, wear one to be safe.
• Hanbok rental — found around downtown. Hanbok against hanok and tombs is the photo.
• Stay in Hwangnidan-gil or Bomun Tourist Complex — Hwangnidan-gil is in the heart of the city; Bomun is a lakeside resort area.
