2026 Muju Firefly Festival: Summer Night Firefly Exploration – From Booking to Observation Tips

The 30th Muju Firefly Festival will be held for nine days, from September 4 (Fri) to September 12 (Sat), 2026, in the area around Hanpungru-ro 326-17, Muju-eup, Muju-gun, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province (including Muju Arts & Culture Center, Deungnamu Sports Complex, Namdaecheon River, and firefly habitats). While admission to the festival grounds is free, all core firefly observation programs require advance online registration on a first-come, first-served basis, with no on-site registration. What's New for the 30th Edition

This year marks the 30th anniversary, leading to several changes in operational methods.

  • Introduction of Kakao T Shuttle Buses: For the first time this year, a system has been introduced where festival-goers can book round-trip shuttles to the festival grounds via the Kakao T app. This marks the nation's first instance of Kakao T operating festival shuttles.
  • Strengthening the 'Three Noes (無) Festival': The festival champions a 'no disposables, no price gouging, no safety accidents' policy. The use of reusable containers has been expanded to include 1,000-won noodle restaurants in towns and villages, and the 1,000-seat Global Food Zone offers food at reasonable prices. Carbon-neutral booths also operate, encouraging eco-friendly practices such as signing the Firefly Eco-Pledge, separate collection of clear PET bottles, and collection/exchange of used batteries.
  • Firefly Theme Hall Expanded 5-fold: The indoor exhibition hall, where visitors can see live fireflies and various insects, has been expanded five times its original size.
  • Enhanced Visitor Convenience: A dedicated information desk for foreigners and exclusive buses for the Mystical Exploration program have been deployed. The Theme Hall now features a fast track for foreigners, people with disabilities, and pregnant women.
  • A 30th-anniversary ceremony, commemorative performances, a global parade, and daily concerts will be held. A permanent exhibition space showcasing the festival's 30-year history will also be available.

  • The Mystical Exploration is a signature program where participants board a bus and travel directly into the firefly habitats to observe their natural light. Of the ₩20,000 participation fee, ₩10,000 is reimbursed as a Muju Love Gift Certificate.
  • The Bandi Starlight Picnic is a program to enjoy the night sky while listening to the sounds of insects at Seo-myeon Soinaru Park. The gathering point is the Bandi Exploration Zone, same as for the Mystical Exploration.
  • The 2-Day 1-Night Ecological Expedition is an immersive package that includes accommodation at Nabom Resort (Wolkok-gil 45, Seolcheon-myeon, Muju-gun), dinner, breakfast, experiential activities, souvenirs, and a Jeonbuk Tour Pass. It covers visits to Muju Taekwondo Adventure, Bandi Land, and mystical exploration sites.
  • Bandi Camping is a 2-day 1-night program where participants stay at the Hyangrosan Natural Recreation Forest Campsite (Muhak-ro 153-36, Muju-eup).

Beyond the observation programs, other night attractions include 'Bandi Feast of Light,' a spectacle combining drones and Nakhwanori (fire flower play), Bandi Concert, BANDI EDM PARTY, and Taekwondo performances (18:00~18:30) at the Global Taekwon Zone.

Firefly Mystical Exploration: From Booking to Return

  1. Booking: Registration is done online on a first-come, first-served basis via the Muju Firefly Festival website. There is no on-site registration. Infants under 36 months are free, but proof documents such as a resident registration copy, family relations certificate, or health insurance card are mandatory, and they cannot occupy a seat.
  2. On the Day (Afternoon): From 17:00, participants receive one ₩10,000 Muju Love Gift Certificate per person at the on-site departure situation room. This system effectively returns half of the participation fee as a gift certificate usable at the festival grounds.
  3. Assembly: The assembly point is the Bandi Exploration Zone (1170 Dangsan-ri, Muju-eup). Boarding procedures begin at 18:40, so it's advisable to arrive with ample time. Boarding and departure times may vary depending on the sunset time, and the exact schedule will be communicated via text message in advance.
  4. Travel and Observation: The bus departs at 19:05, taking participants to observe fireflies in their habitat.
  5. Return: The bus returns at 21:00.

Please note the following restrictions. Accompanying pets and the use of mobility aids like wheelchairs are restricted, and the program may be canceled in case of inclement weather. Mystical Exploration for foreigners is an exception, allowing on-site registration without prior booking, but a passport or alien registration card must be presented.

What to Bring and Observation Tips

The required items are simple.

  • Long pants and athletic shoes. Considering insects in grassy areas and cool night temperatures, closed-toe shoes are preferable.
  • An outer layer suitable for a September evening walk.
  • Proof documents (resident registration copy, family relations certificate, health insurance card, etc.) if accompanying a child under 36 months.
  • A mobile phone to receive reservation confirmation texts. Changes in departure time will be sent via text message.

Reducing light is crucial for observation. The festival explicitly prohibits LED shoes that flash with every step, as they can disturb other participants' observations. For the same reason, turning off your phone screen and flash is beneficial for your and your group's observation experience. Weather conditions like rain or storms directly affect the visibility of fireflies, so on days with bad weather, it's better to lower your expectations or aim for a different session.

Getting There: Shuttles and Parking

Inter-city shuttle buses can be booked via the Kakao T app (Go to 'See All Services' → 'Shuttle' → 'Local Festivals' → 'Muju Firefly Festival'). They operate for a total of 5 days, including Fri-Sun, on September 4~6 and September 11~12, departing from 21 stops across 13 regions nationwide.

  • 8 routes in the Seoul Metropolitan Area: Gangnam, Sadang, Seoul Station, Jamsil, Hapjeong Station in Seoul; Migeum Station in Seongnam; Yeongtong Station in Suwon; Bupyeong Station in Incheon.
  • 13 regional routes: Sangmu Station, Comprehensive Bus Terminal in Gwangju; Gunsan; Banwoldang, Yongsan Station in Daegu; Complex Terminal, City Hall Station in Daejeon; Dongnae, Seomyeon Station in Busan; Suncheon; Yeosu; Iksan; Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

Buses operate daily for round trips or one-way service to Jinam Park P2 Parking Lot within the festival grounds. Schedules and fares can be confirmed on the Kakao T app and the festival website.

Local shuttle buses run separately during the same 5 days, passing through the festival grounds, Taekwondowon, Bandi Land, and the Gucheondong accommodation complex. If you've booked accommodation in the Gucheondong area, you can leave your car and take this shuttle.

If traveling by private car, parking is available at 1723 Dangsan-ri, Muju-eup (Dangsan-gangbyeon-ro 32). After parking, visitors can take a shuttle bus to the event venue.

Daytime Events and Activities

While the firefly exploration takes place in the evening, the festival grounds open from 10:00.

  • Bandi Theme Hall (10:00~21:00, ₩5,000 per person): An indoor ecological exhibition hall where visitors can closely observe live fireflies and various insects. Admission is free for children under 36 months with proof documents, and for Muju residents on weekdays (Mon-Thu) with ID.
  • Bandi Kids World, Namdaecheon Life Plus, Water Splash Festival: Experiential events perfect for spending time with children.
  • Cultural Arts Performances and Flea Market: Continuously operating around the Deungnamu Sports Complex.
  • Muju Firefly National Gastrodia Elata Cooking Competition: National Sports Center, 14:00~16:00.
  • Taekwondo Performance: Global Taekwon Zone, 18:00~18:30. This is a good time to watch before gathering for the Mystical Exploration.

Why Muju: The Firefly as an Insect

Fireflies are environmental indicator insects that only inhabit clean water and environments. The firefly habitats in the Muju County area are designated as natural monuments, and these habitats are the foundation upon which the festival has continued for 30 years. The primary purpose of fireflies emitting light is mating, and it also serves as a communication method to protect themselves from predators and signal danger. The flickering you see during the exploration is not mere illumination but a signal from the insects, making the rule to minimize artificial light both a matter of viewing etiquette and a way to increase observation success.

The period for observing fireflies in Muju is not limited to just one time. This year, the Unmunsan Firefly Mystical Exploration was held 10 times from June 3 to 14, and in September, the Mystical Exploration will reopen in conjunction with the festival. This means there are two windows of opportunity, marking both the beginning and end of summer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Can I see fireflies at all if I go without a reservation? The Mystical Exploration, Bandi Starlight Picnic, and Ecological Expedition, which go into the habitats, do not offer on-site registration, so you cannot participate without a reservation. However, you can see live fireflies at the Bandi Theme Hall (₩5,000 per person), and foreigners can exceptionally use the foreigner-exclusive Mystical Exploration by registering on-site with a passport or alien registration card.

  • Is there a separate fee for children? For the Mystical Exploration and Bandi Starlight Picnic, adult and child fees are the same (₩20,000 and ₩10,000 respectively). Infants under 36 months are free but must have proof documents, and cannot occupy a seat during the Mystical Exploration.

  • What happens if it rains? The Mystical Exploration may be canceled due to inclement weather. Even if not canceled, rain or storms can affect the visibility of fireflies. Departure status and time changes will be communicated via text message in advance, so please check the contact information registered at the time of booking.

  • Can I still go on an exploration after the festival ends? Yes, it's possible. The Mystical Exploration continues until September 20, even after the festival closes (September 12), only taking a break on September 14 (Mon) and 15 (Tue). However, Kakao T inter-city shuttles only operate on September 4~6 and 11~12, so alternative transportation, such as a private car, will be needed afterward.

  • What does it mean to get a portion of the participation fee back? Participants in the Mystical Exploration receive one ₩10,000 Muju Love Gift Certificate per person. These can be collected from 17:00 on the day at the on-site departure situation room and are usable at the festival grounds and within Muju County. This means the actual cost per person is effectively ₩10,000.

  • Where and how do I book the shuttle bus? In the Kakao T app, go to 'See All Services' → 'Shuttle' → 'Local Festivals' → 'Muju Firefly Festival' to select your route and time, then book. Advance reservation is required, and schedules can be confirmed on the Kakao T app and the festival website.
